last journal entry I spoke about happiness being within ourselves as opposed to some external thing making us happy. How does one weather proof the soul and create a happiness generator within? Well, in my opinion, there are two key components to happiness:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p style=""&gt;&lt;span&gt;1)&lt;span style="font: 7pt Times New Roman;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Take the initiative and be proactive rather than reactive to your environment. When we &amp;ldquo;let things happen to us&amp;rdquo; we are enslaved to circumstance, waiting for the next circumstance to react to. Instead, let the world react to you. Decide on your course of action beforehand and stick to your well thought out intentions and plans despite the ominous well intentioned warnings from people who think they know you and what&amp;rsquo;s best for you. If you internalize the fears of others, you immobilize the force of your dreams and they are never realized. If you need advice in a particular area, make you get it from people who have proven their success in that endeavor.&lt;p /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p style=""&gt;&lt;span&gt;2)&lt;span style="font: 7pt Times New Roman;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Whatever decision you make, make sure it is your decision. There is a difference in deciding to serve others and being enslaved by others. Many people, for their own selfish motives, seek to make you feel obliged to serve them or do things their way. Well, not even God forces us to serve him for he loves a cheerful and willing servant. So we should never do things based on a nod of approval from others, this motivation always proves to fail when our decision proves faulty and those we sought to please suddenly withdraw away from us into the shadows. The moral of the story is, we alone are always held accountable for the decisions we make, and so those decisions should be based on what we feel is right after we&amp;rsquo;ve weighed the evidence to the best of our ability.&lt;p /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p style="margin-left: 0.25in;"&gt;In these two components we are not advocating a selfish me first attitude, which is opposed to enjoying personal interactions or sharing an interchange of thought with others. What we are discussing is true autonomy that enhances our enjoyment in interacting with people who are who they are by choice. Would you rather hear the words, &amp;ldquo;I love you&amp;rdquo; from someone who said it just to please you or some moral institution or would you rather hear those words springing forth from a heart and mind that genuinely admires you? Of course, if you&amp;rsquo;re like most people, you want an expression of affection to be out of a person&amp;rsquo;s free will, unpretentious. &lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p style="margin-left: 0.25in;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p style="margin-left: 0.25in;"&gt;So there you have it. Happiness is something within the realm of conscious decisions. You choose to be happy or you choose to be miserable when you let happenstance and the wills of others dictate it. She&amp;rsquo;s sleeping as I type this, but I&amp;rsquo;m sure she&amp;rsquo;s going to wake up like a groggy bear this morning. As for me, it&amp;rsquo;s 5 am and I know better to be up typing in my journal&amp;hellip;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Anyway, there is some good food for thought today: &amp;ldquo;Happiness is not outside; it is within.&amp;rdquo; I felt miserable yesterday due to recovering from the flu. Some glimmers of sunshine shown through to my face I&amp;rsquo;m sure. The happiness and energy that surrounded me yesterday somehow did infiltrate into my inner soul and struck a cord. The energy of people around can certainly affect you. But you have to let your environment affect you; happiness is an inner working that largely is in your control.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Your thoughts and feeling do not happen to you, you generate them and make them happen. You are the captain of your ship. One thing I do know for certain is that when you let others steer your ship it leads to shipwreck. Good advice, &amp;ldquo;Take counsel from people who have &lt;em&gt;proven&lt;/em&gt; their success.&amp;rdquo; And when you do, make sure it is only after quite reflection that &lt;em&gt;you have come to agree&lt;/em&gt; this is the best choice for you.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Okay, I can see this is going to be one of those long and deep journal entries&amp;mdash;but I think you get the point. Cherish your autonomy, avoid the habit of reacting to life and instead take time by the horns and plan your future; avoid being superficial, take time to meditate and search your soul for true genuine feeling and thought. It&amp;rsquo;s a 15k, 9.3 mile course that has a hill, two bridges, at the beginning and near the end. After 8 miles it&amp;rsquo;s basically all down hill into the coliseum.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Today was a new experience for me jogging in the &amp;ldquo;turtle pack.&amp;rdquo; No offense guys, knowing many of the 10 minutes per mile plus runners are giving it their all and many are newbies like my daughter. The objective for a first race is always just to finish the race. I took great pride in my daughter jogging the whole way, stopping only for water breaks. So many people cut corners or walked the last mile. Some were injured, dehydrated, or just had a &amp;lsquo;blowout&amp;rsquo; from running out to fast at the start&amp;mdash;I take my hat off to you as you did the best you could. But I know many simply cheated themselves of a best effort. I ask how can you honestly accept that finisher&amp;rsquo;s medal and look yourself in the mirror and be proud of yourself?!&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;For me this was a semi-dangerous run having still some remnants of the flu running through my veins. I felt very weak and sensed a hint of pneumonia. Oh. I hope I didn't have pnuemonia. I expended every effort to prep myself for this race to run with my daughter-- Golden Seal, Cayenne Pepper and Apple Cider Vinegar drinks, eating raw garlic, staying away from meat-- in fact, I went vegetarian, but that's another story.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Anyway my daughter totally surprised. She blew out on a 4 miler just a few days before race day complaining of cramps. I wondered if I over trained her by having her do 2  miles of fartleck at a bridge and then jogging another 4 miles&amp;mdash;all this a week before the race. But we stuck to our game plan&amp;mdash;nice easy pace without letting yourself get excited by the racing atmosphere.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Oh what an atmosphere (okay, I&amp;rsquo;m going to use an antiquated word here, watch out)full of such &lt;em&gt;gaiety&lt;/em&gt;, nice circa 72&amp;deg; weather, racers hooting, singing, and hollering the whole way, live bands pumping out rhythmic beats, and even livelier spectators who were very interactive with us racers. One boy gave my daughter a necklace, another woman have her a a very enthusiastic high 5. There were people running in Superman, Wonder Woman, and Flash costumes. I saw one guy dressed up like a carrot, a fireman with real water tank on his back, a soldier wearing a fully packed backpack. Believe they real know how to throw a party. One spectator group had bear and bacon handouts, really.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Anyway, I looked at my daughter Shannan near the top of that last bridge. She asked me how people could give up and walk so close to the finish line. I looked at her face and she had the look of pure determination. Nothing more needed be said. The last few yards of the race she let loose a burst a speed that caught me totally by surprise. You&lt;br /&gt;may already be familiar with the healing powers&lt;br /&gt;of garlic. You can crush a bulb and drink it in&lt;br /&gt;tea with honey, but I suggest for maximum effect&lt;br /&gt;you eat a bulb raw and chase it down with your&lt;br /&gt;favoirte beverage.&lt;p /&gt;My all time favorite? Mix 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne&lt;br /&gt;pepper with water. You can gargle or drink this.&lt;br /&gt;I drink it and sometimes add 2 tablespoons of apple &lt;br /&gt;cider vinegar for added potency and about a tablespoon&lt;br /&gt;of honey for Yet Christians are [either] unaware [or choose to ignore] that the God they profess to believe in had condemned the eating of swine's flesh. The condemnation was based on some very sound biological principles. Here are some facts on pork that prove it to be a very unhealthy food to eat:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      A pig is a real garbage gut. It will eat anything including urine, excrement, dirt, decaying animal flesh, maggots, or decaying vegetables. They will even eat the cancerous growths off other pigs or animals.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      The meat and fat of a pig absorbs toxins like a sponge. Their meat can be 30 times more toxic than beef or venison.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      When eating beef or venison, it takes 8 to 9 hours to digest the meat so what little toxins are in the meat are slowly put into our system and can be filtered by the liver. But when pork is eaten, it takes only 4 hours to digest the meat. We thus get a much higher level of toxins within a shorter time.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      Unlike other mammals, a pig does not sweat or perspire. Perspiration is a means by which toxins are removed from the body. Since a pig does not sweat, the toxins remain within its body and in the meat.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      Pigs and swine are so poisonous that you can hardly kill them with strychnine or other poisons. Farmers will often pen up pigs within a rattlesnake nest because the pigs will eat the snakes, and if bitten they will not be harmed by the venom.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      When a pig is butchered, worms and insects take to its flesh sooner and faster than to other animal's flesh. In a few days the swine flesh is full of worms.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      Swine and pigs have over a dozen parasites within them, such as tapeworms, flukes, worms, and trichinae. There is no safe temperature at which pork can be cooked to ensure that all these parasites, their cysts, and eggs will be killed.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      Pig meat has twice as much fat as beef. A three-ounce T-bone steak contains 8.5 grams of fat; a three-ounce pork chop contains 18 grams of fat. A three-ounce beef rib has 11.1 grams of fat; a three-ounce pork spare rib has 23.2 grams of fat.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      Cows have a complex digestive system, having four stomachs. It thus takes over 24 hours to digest their vegetarian diet causing its food to be purified of toxins. In contrast, the swine's one stomach takes only about four hours to digest its foul diet, turning its toxic food into flesh.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      The swine carries about 30 diseases which can be easily passed to humans. This is why God commanded that we are not even to touch their carcass. (Leviticus 11:8).&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      The trichinae worm of the swine is microscopically small, and once ingested can lodge itself in our intestines, muscles, spinal cord or the brain. This results in the disease trichinosis. The symptoms are sometimes lacking, but when present they are mistaken for other diseases, such as typhoid, arthritis, rheumatism, gastritis, MS, meningitis, gall bladder trouble, or acute alcoholism.&lt;br /&gt;       &lt;br /&gt;    *&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      The pig is so poisonous and filthy that nature had to prepare him a sewer line or canal running down each leg with an outlet in the bottom of the foot. Out of this hole oozes pus and filth his body cannot pass into its system fast enough. Some of this pus gets into the meat of the pig. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are other reasons grounded in biological facts that could be listed to show why pigs and swine should not be eaten. But a true Christian should only need one reason why not to eat this type of food: because God prohibits it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"And the swine, because it divides the hoof, yet does not chew the cud, it is unclean unto you: you shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass." (Leviticus 11:7,8; Deuteronomy 14:8)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Those who say Christ abolished the law condemning pork are motivated by their stomach, not Scripture. The problems with pork are biological, and Christ never changed the laws of biology.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;To Market to Market to Buy ... a Fat Hog&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;by "MB" talmidim@...&lt;br /&gt;http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BneiHaMelech/message/560&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's amazing how much confusion there is out there today regarding what is healthful food.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The world is full of individuals who have fallen prey to all manner of infirmity, sickness, and disease — sometimes merely uncomfortable, but more often crippling or even fatal — who, either in ignorance or with supposed superior knowledge, have disregarded the unchangeable health laws.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hogs! They were created as scavengers; as a rule they are meat-eating animals that clean up anything that is left dead in the fields, etc. If any animal should die in the field and lie in the sun until it is broken open and the maggots and putrefaction have set in, the swine or other scavengers will come and eat up the filth and putrid matter. Scavengers were never meant for human consumption.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scavengers, such as the swine, are the filthiest and most abominable creatures. In their very nature they are poisonous, diseased, and deadly. The flesh of the swine is said by many authorities to be the prime cause of much of our American ill health, causing blood disease, weakness of the stomach, liver troubles, eczema, consumption, tumors, cancer, trichinosis, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The swine's anatomy has but one poorly constructed stomach arrangement and very limited excretory organs generally. Consequently, in about four hours after the pig has eaten his polluted swill and other putrid, offensive matter, man may eat the same, second-hand, off the ribs of the pig.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;John Johnson, a farmer of Williams, Iowa, speaks on this subject. He states that the swine in Iowa are principally fed on corn, but "will eat anything we give them. If anything dies, we throw it to the hogs. I have actually seen hogs chewing at the cancer of other hogs and these hogs are shipped to market. Many times cattle are infected from the incurable diseases of the hog called the `mad itch.' It is transmitted by the hog's saliva left on the corn, which cattle eat. The itching in the cattle becomes so intense they will run from stump to stump until they rub their skin from their mouths and soon die. When the saliva from the hog's mouth will poison cattle in this way, how can hogs be fit for man to eat?"1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Farmers know that when they are feeding cattle, it pays for them to keep hogs, so that the hogs can follow after the cattle, eat the filth from the cattle, and thus turn it into pork for the public market.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Swine have "running sores" under their hoofs. If you ever get the opportunity to visit a farm that raises hogs, lift the front hoof of the hog, and, with just a little pressure, greenish matter will ooze out from between the toes. This is one small outlet for the various heinous poisons that the hog takes into his body. Occasionally this artery becomes stopped up, the poison backs up into his system, and greenish growths are formed in various parts of his body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"On a close analysis of this filthy scrofulous serum, or the `culture' of its bacilli under varied conditions, it is seen to contain the elements of many dangerous diseases and combinations; yet how toothsome is pickled pig's feet to ignorance, unbelief, and disobedience."2&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some may be led to conclude that if the hog was kept in clean quarters and given nothing but pure food to eat, its flesh would then be just as desirable for human consumption as the flesh of any other animal, but that just isn't true. The naturally filthy hog could be forced into the most sanitary conditions, nourished upon delicacies, and still would be unfit for food due to the basic physiological functions of it system. For this reason, God states in the Scriptures, "It is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Scriptures warn us about the diseases lurking in these unclean animals (they are scavengers of the earth). These signals have been placed there for very good reasons. They are flashing red lights to keep us from impending disaster.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During recent years discoveries by the medical establishment has brought to light reasons why God, thousands of years ago, condemned the hog as unfit for food. The microscope has revealed that the flesh of hogs is often infested with trichina worms, which when taken into the human body, multiply and begin to work their way through the entire system, even into the brain and heart. This condition is known as trichinosis. Even today in America, the public is warned and advised to cook ALL pork well done. This is to make sure that the only trichinae worm you eat is a cooked one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But it is a known fact that heat does not guarantee the killing of all pork worms. The larva are very tiny and you can unknowingly swallow several hundred of them. Then when the natural warmth and even temperature of your body envelops them, they dissolve and become free to go about the task of growing and breeding further in your body. To suffer the symptoms of pork worm poisoning you need not eat but one pregnant parasite. If the number of parasites is sufficient, the body responds with symptoms similar to reactions to food poisoning. Later, rheumatic-like pains may begin, or the worms may settle temporarily in the heart. Inflammation in the cardiac region may follow. In some cases the brain or nervous system may be disturbed, as though worms had invaded brain or nerves, which possibly they do. Even invasion of the muscles may be fatal if the worms are numerous enough.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"In the pork which we Americans eat, there too often lurk myriads (countless numbers) of baffling and sinister parasites. They are minute spiral worms which scientists call Trichinella spirals. A single serving of infected pork — even a single mouthful — can kill or cripple, or condemn the victim to a lifetime of aches and pains. In the flesh of a pig, the trichinae are often so minute and so nearly transparent that to find them, even with a microscope, is a task for expert scientific inspectors ...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Remember this: When you see stamped on a pork product the words `U.S. Government Inspected and Passed,' those words do not mean that any official inspection whatever has been made as to whether this pork has trichinosis or not. It has merely passed the routine inspection given meat in general.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The trichina is just one worm found in the swine. There is a large round worm, the gullet worm, three kinds of stomach worms, a tiny hairworm, a hookworm, and the thorn-headed worm, in the small intestine. There are several species of nodular worms and one species of whipworm in the large intestine, and the kidney worm. The large round worm can be as big as eighteen inches.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"A special report given to medical personnel at a Doctors and Nurses Conference on Communicable Disease at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas, in 1962 said that one out of three people are infected with trichinosis."3&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"In a Colorado town pork sausage showing the trichina worms was taken by the federal pathologists from a peddler of fresh pork sausage after a family had been made severely ill from eating his product. One girl, age 18, was so ill that she was taken to the hospital where, on account of the heavy infestation of her diaphragm, her breathing was so bad that she had to receive oxygen inhalations three times a day to keep her alive. A small piece of muscle taken from her deltoid, or shoulder, muscle showed trichinae infestation. The family was at first diagnosed as having influenza, or muscular rheumatism. This mistake is probably often made in light cases of trichinosis, which probably affects about one person out of every four in this country.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"In an effort to cull out the trichinae-infested hogs, or the worst of them, an attempt was made for a time to examine microscopically the tissues of each hog, by having a room full of microscopists examining bits of muscle tissue. The difficulty of this can be better understood when it is known that in Chicago alone there are two packing houses that can kill, dress, and pack six hundred hogs an hour each, which means an average of one every six seconds. This effort had to be abandoned as impractical and expensive, and so the Department of Agriculture, in a bulletin on trichinosis, says that `no practical system has yet been devised by which persons who eat raw or imperfectly cooked pork can be protected from the danger of trichinosis.'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"In this same bulletin it is pointed out that in Germany, where microscopical examination of pork for trichinae is systematically carried out, there occurred in seventeen years 6,329 cases of trichinosis, 32 percent of which were from inspected meat that had been passed as free from trichinae infestation. To safeguard the consuming public, the government has prepared a poster for the use of the meat trade, warning the public to `cook pork and its products thoroughly.' The reason is not given on the poster, but it offers to send an explanatory leaflet on request. It would not add to the attractiveness of pork as a food, nor would it tend to increase the sale of pork products, to inform the public bluntly that among garbage-fed hogs trichinosis infection is common, with a slightly decreased frequency among hogs in general. Garbage-fed rats have their tissues loaded with the trichina worms. But it's equally important, as far as recovery goes, to have protein after a workout. If you're training to improve performance, then likely you've wore down some weak muscle. In any event, you need to recover and you need amino acids/ protein to aide in that repair. It's also important to have your protein with vegetables. I believe in using protein as a base for dietary recovery, but in essence you want to have on hand complete nutrition to counteract any deficiencies. It's important, I think, for athletes to have variety in their diet. It makes eating special and fun. Like I tell my son, "If you're going to eat, then eat." Sit down and have a meal, satisfy yourself in the healthiest way possible. I think nuts of any kind are a great immediate snack to have after a workout. I am not being fascitious. I'm quite serious. Yes eat green leafy vegetables. Eat a variety of healthy fruits and vegetables. Find a great whole food supplement. Etcetera, etcetera. How do I feel about heavily processed foods, fats, and sweets? They are absolutely horrible for your body. They make you feel sluggish and actually act as sludge in your circulatory system causing a whole host of problems and possible diseases. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They argument is closed on garbage food. They do absolutely nothing for the body. However, I still think it's healthy for your outlook to treat yourself to a sweet desert in moderation once in awhile. I think it can actually be detrimental to be so rigid with diet and regimen that we squeeze the fun out of staying healthy. In the long run, I say give yourself a little treat and be the better for it!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What are your thoughts on this touchy topic. This will be a little more focused than a general health and fitness topic. My other blog http://mistergoodbuy.wordpress.com will continue to focus on my daily fitness journal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So let's talk a little about diet and nutrition as it relates to staying healthy and getting in shape. My son is battling the battle of the bulge and seems to think he can literally have his exercise and eat his cake too! (LOL, I normally don't laugh at my own jokes, but wasn't that a good one?) Anyway... in getting in shape, we need to  become our own best allies and not work against our training by packing in calories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think one discipline to master is what we eat between meals. Those little nibbles between meals add up to a lot of calories and they prevent true digestion of preingested food, i.e, your breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I tell my son, eat a satisfying breakfast, lunch, or dinner... have your fill and then stop eating!!! This is a unwelcome counsel and a hard lesson for him to learn. Especially, since Dad gets away with regularly breaking this rule and stays so slim. He became upset that I was jogging backwards and he couldn't keep up. He complained several times that you're a long distance runner. Stop showing off!!! I said, "I don't mean to show off, it's just that we're jogging so slow." Now when you're training with someone who is not on your level it's NOT a good thing to frustrate them. After all, they may be giving it all they got. So you let them save face, try not to do anything to rub it in. But I really felt insulted, does a bull tell a cheetah not to run fast. It's what a cheetah does. And when it's not running fast, it's playfully prancing along, exploring it's dynamics. Anyway, that's what I was doing. So I says him, "Son, you think you're big and bad when you play your video games, but you're not so hot out here on the road in reality. And then you gripe at me." "I can't play video games like you. I can't even imagine playing at your level. But I never tell you stop playing video games because you're stealing my thunder?!" At first, it didn't make sense to him. But he gradually came to understand the connection-- if you're not good at something, don't complain, improve your game. And like I always tell him, "drive your own car." Compare yourself to yourself alone and drive toward your goal. However, this morning we decided to switch up our routine with the Total Gym. We also have Joe Weider version of the Total Gym called Total Body Works 5000, which I believe to be superior to the Total Gym. Anyone these machines are great for stretching the body as you extend during the exercises. They also work the muscles in safe unique ways. It is thought to play a primary role in the origin of DNA. Vitamin B12 plays a key role in the body and is associated with lower levels of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is now believed to be toxic to the cells that line blood vessels, and also may increase blood clotting. B12 is required for energy production and overall health of the body, including red blood cell formation. Other roles of B12 include proper nervous system development and prevention of infertility in men. It has also been shown to improve memory and promote heart health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lack of sufficient amounts of vitamin B12 can create a deficiency or absorption problems that can lead to anemia. Research has shown that Vitamin B12 levels decline with age. The process is called neurodegeneration. The number of lives affected by neurodegeneration is currently the highest in U.S. history and can ultimately be a source of major physical and mental debilitation for many Americans. For many, it is the difference between continuing a good quality of life or gradual loss of function. This process of neurodegeneration begins at the cellular level where oxidative stress relentlessly inflicts cell damage and death. The main force causing this destruction at the cellular level is known as “free radicals.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In every cell of the body, both the cell nucleus and the mitochondrial DNA are vulnerable to free radical damage. In fact, antioxidants have been proven to decrease the oxidative stress in smokers and eliminate the bad effects of fatty meals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The body God has given us has a great ability to heal itselfif we provide the nutritional building blocks. The antioxidant status of the individual is of importance in both the prevention and treatment of disease.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The same JANA issue quotes Mark Houston, MD, who has authored one of the most definitive papers pointing out the role antioxidants play in both prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, the number one killer in America today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Denham Harman, MD, PhD, founder of the American Aging Association, is best known for developing the “free radical theory of aging.” Dr. Harmon published his findings in a dietary antioxidant study in 1968, offering the first proof that dietary antioxidants can increase the life span of mice almost equal to the effects of caloric restriction. He discovered that mitochondrial decay in the cells plays a large role in aging and that the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid can reverse this decay to levels found in young animals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Writing in the Journal of Gerontology, 1956, Harman was one of the first in the medical field to state that inflammatory agents are believed to contribute to heart disease and cancers, and that the primary initiating event in atherosclerosis was the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Harman predicted that antioxidants could slow or prevent LDL oxidation. This is now accepted as fact. Today we know that antioxidants in DHLA, the pure form of ALA, resveratrol, and green tea, all working with the co-factors of vitamin B can indeed slow down the process of LDL, and other oxidation, and prevent free radical damage to the cells.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now libraries are full of empirical research evidence showing the destructive effects of free radicals on biological tissues and the protection of those tissues by antioxidants. It is now believed, with a sound scientific basis, that antioxidants can significantly extend the average life span of mammals, including humans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dr. David Williams, author of Alternatives, writes: “Free radical damage is now recognized as the greatest contributor to most health problems. By limiting the activity of free radicals, antioxidants protect cells and their components from this damage, thereby lessening the risk of cancer, heart disease, vision problems and other diseases.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Free Radical Reduction and Antioxidant Levels in Food&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Research shows that the United States has experienced a 50% reduction in the antioxidant content of our food over the last 25 years. We wonder what has happened during the last thirty years, since the 1970 study.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sadly, our food is now saturated with new classes of dangerous chemicals, chemicals so common we rarely lift a hand to protest anymore. In 1986, the FDA released its long-range Total Diet Study. In the study, the FDA obtained food from grocery stores throughout the United States. They measured the total number of pesticide/chemical residues in certain fruits and vegetables.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are a few typical examples of the stunning levels of toxics they found in vegetables: broccoli-45; potatoes-96; tomatoes-50; celery-78. Toxics found in fruits included: apples-80; peaches-97; grapes-63; raisins-110. Since the FDA study ended in 1986, we can only guess what the toxic levels of our vegetables and fruits are today. If you consider the EPA’s warning that exposure to pesticides is a top risk factor in cancer, the toxic residue numbers reflect one of the reasons cancer is increasing so rapidly today, and these toxic residue numbers are simply unacceptable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To further pollute our food supply, splicing bacterial and viral genes into our God-given food seeds has created what many call “Franken-foods” - genetically tampered food - that can slowly poison and sicken consumers over time with a whole spectrum of uncharted symptoms. Current estimates are that up to 70 percent of the products on our grocery store shelves contain ingredients which have been genetically altered. Do you remember voting for bacterial genes to be spliced into the potatoes you eat? Or voting for fish genes in your tomatoes? These “Franken-foods” are a ticking time bomb that may prove to be an exploding health bomb - sooner or later.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What about eating “Organically Grown” food? Unfortunately, organically grown foods are often sprayed with chemicals after harvest, during transport, or in storage. We suggest finding a farmer’s market and getting to know a farmer who does not use toxic chemicals and pesticides in their growing of fruits and vegetables.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If there are not enough critical nutrients, especially antioxidants, or your body is not able to replace them fast enough, your body cannot fight the incoming toxic barrage. Without antioxidant power, your body has no choice but to try to store the toxics in the fat of the body, in the brain, or other organs and body tissues. The body then creates more fat cells for the toxins to hide in. This is how the tired get more tired and how we gain more and more weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Considering the big picture - this ever-raging battle of nutrients vs. toxic chemicals and antioxidants vs. “free radicals” (cells that have become destructive to other cells) - we have to realize that lowered amounts of vital nutrients translates into exactly what we don’t want:  rapid aging, feeling tired, weight gain, greater risk of chronic disease, and deficiency symptoms (from poor memory to chronic fatigue to headaches).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Supplying the body with high levels of nutrients can mean feeling great. Low levels of nutrients can mean feeling half dead. Deficient nutrient levels also mean being at risk for the most dreaded chronic diseases such as arthritis, prostatitis, neuritis, tendonitis, diabetes, asthma, and even cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To get protection from the efforts of toxic damage and stress, the smart person has to realize that regular food is not the answer. But are supplements giving you what you really need?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Vitamins originate mainly in plants. Vitamins are substances which are essential in small amounts for good health of the body, including growth, maintenance, repair, and reproduction. Many vitamins must be derived from food since they cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities in the body. Each vitamin has a specific action and function and one vitamin cannot replace another.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Only since the 1920s have we begun extracting nutrients from food or synthesizing them in a laboratory, then putting them into pills to supplement our diets. But buyer beware! The body was designed to get nutrients from food, not a laboratory.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In trying to isolate the active factors in food, USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) vitamins were created to mimic real vitamins. But synthetic USP vitamins are not food, even though they are often called “natural.” USP vitamins are chemical isolates synthesized in a laboratory. In whole food, vitamins are never isolated. They are always present as a part of a larger nutrient complex. Extraction of sugar from sugarcane spurred the colonization of the New World. Extraction of sugar from beets wasdeveloped during the time of Napoleon so that the French could have sugar in spite of the English trading blockade.&lt;br /&gt;Nobody thinks of sugar when they see a field of corn. Most of us would be surprisedto learn that the larger percentage of sweeteners used in processed food comes from corn, not sugar cane or beets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The process for making the sweetener high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) out of corn was developed in the 1970s. Use of HFCS grew rapidly, from less than three million shorttons in 1980 to almost 8 million short tons in 1995. During the late 1990s, use of sugar actually declined as it was eclipsed by HFCS. Today Americans consume moreHFCS than sugar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HFCS has the exact same sweetness and taste as an equal amount of sucrose from caneor beet sugar but it is much more complicated to make, involving vats ofmurky fermenting liquid, fungus and chemical tweaking, all of which take place in one of 16 chemical plants located in the Corn Belt. Yet in spite of all the specialenzymes required, HFCS is actually cheaper than sugar. It is also very easy totransport--it's just piped into tanker trucks. This translates into lower costs andhigher profits for food producers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today HFCS is used to sweeten jams, condiments like ketchup, and soft drinks. It isalso a favorite ingredient in many so-called health foods. Four companies control 85percent of the $2.6 billion business--Archer Daniels Midland, Cargill, Staley Manufacturing Co. and CPC International. In the mid-1990s, ADM was the object of an FBI probe into price fixing of three products--HFCS, citric acid and lysine--andconsumers got a glimpse of the murky world of corporate manipulation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's a couple of other murky things that consumers should know about HFCS. According to a food technology expert, two of the enzymes used, alpha-amylase and glucose-isomerase, are genetically modified to make them more stable. Enzymes are actually very large proteins and through genetic modification specific amino acids in the enzymes are changed or replaced so the enzyme's "backbone" won't break down or unfold. This allows the industry to get the enzymes to higher temperatures before they become unstable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consumers trying to avoid genetically modified foods should avoid HFCS. It is almost certainly made from genetically modified corn and then it is processed with genetically modified enzymes. I've seen some estimates claiming that virtually everything--almost 80 percent--of what we eat today has been genetically modified at some point. Since the use of HFCS is so prevalent in processed foods, those figures may be right.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there's another reason to avoid HFCS. Consumers may think that because it contains fructose--which they associate with fruit, which is a natural food--that it is healthier than sugar. A team of investigators at the USDA, led by Dr. Meira Field, has discovered that this just isn't so.&lt;br /&gt;Sucrose is composed of glucose and fructose. When sugar is given to rats in high amounts, the rats develop multiple health problems, especially when the rats were deficient in certain nutrients, such as copper. The researchers wanted to know whether it was the fructose or the glucose that was causing the problems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So they repeated their studies with two groups of rats, one given high amounts of glucose and one given high amounts of fructose. The glucose group was unaffected but the fructose group had disastrous results. The male rats did not reach adulthood.They had anemia, high cholesterol and heart hypertrophy--that means that their hearts enlarged until they exploded. They also had delayed testicular development.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dr. Field explains that fructose in combination with copper deficiency in the growing animal interferes with collagen production. (Copper deficiency, by the way, is widespread in America.) In a nutshell, the little bodies of the rats just fell apart. The females were unable to produce live young.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"The medical profession thinks fructose is better for diabetics than sugar," says Dr. Field, "but every cell in the body can metabolize glucose. However, all fructose must be metabolized in the liver. The livers of the rats on the high fructose diet looked like the livers of alcoholics, plugged with fat and cirrhotic."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HFCS contains more fructose than sugar and this fructose is more immediatelyavailable because it is not bound up in sucrose. Since the effects of fructose are most severe in the growing organism, we need to think carefully about what kind of sweeteners we give to our children. Fruit juices should be strictly avoided--they are very high in fructose--but so should anything with HFCS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Interestingly, although HFCS is used in many products aimed at children, it is not used in baby formula, even though it would probably save the manufactueres a few pennies for each can. Do the formula makers know something they aren't telling us? Stick to living source supplements. Instead I walked for an hour on my treadclimber. Yes, I read the Bible and various quotations I had put on a stack of index cards. The quotes are words of wisdom from various famous people such as Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammad Ali, Bruce Lee, William James, Dale Carnegie, et al. You can make a deck of cards for yourself like this. I've included lots of calming scriptures in mine. If you do this idea it will be very rewarding.
